Radical Oak Mall Downsizing Plan Could Lead To Town Centre Apartments Development

The owners of Greenock's Oak Mall want to demolish a large section of the shopping centre, making way for a possible mixed-use development including apartments. The radical plan has been partly prompted by the need for major roadworks on the A78 which passes over the centre.

High Profile Cruise Terminal Will Mean Big Loss of Parking Plus Road Closure For Tourist Coaches

The multi-million pound cruise passenger terminal, gallery and restaurant planned for Greenock will take up a third of the parking spaces at the Waterfront. Meanwhile coach drop-off arrangements will mean a road closure on days when cruise ships are in port.

Row Over £45m Given To Ferguson's Shipyard Deepens

Finance Secretary Derek Mackay was forced to answer an urgent question in the Scottish Parliament over the payments and changed his previous justification as he confirmed Holyrood was kept in the dark for seven months. After previously saying public money was used to help the firm 'diversify', Mr Mackay told MSPs that the cash injection for the Port Glasgow yard was used to help ensure its 'viability'.

Finance Secretary Opens 'Life Changing Course' That Guarantees Greenock Students a Job

Twelve students from West College Scotland's Finnart Street campus are the first intake for the 'AC Whyte Skills Academy'. The innovative course is a unique partnership between the college and AC Whyte, a construction company which delivers major refurbishment and external wall insulation projects throughout the UK.

Call For Industrial Strategy To 'Save' Crumbling Clyde Docks

Senior politicians from three parties have backed calls for a new industrial strategy to help "save" former ship repair sites on the Clyde. A letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says the Inchgreen dry dock in Greenock and Govan Graving Docks have needlessly been allowed to decay.

Inverclyde Tops The Table For Unemployment In Scotland

New figures reveal that 2,745 men and women are without a job and claiming either Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) or Universal Credit (UC). That amounts to 7.5 per cent of the local population who are able to work, or 'economically active'.

Old Inverclyde Trains Starting To Get Withdrawn

Scotrail have announced that they are finally phasing out unpopular 40-year-old trains from Inverclyde's lines. The operator confirmed they have retired the first three Class 314 trains, replaced by its Class 380 fleet, which have sockets, WiFi and toilets on board.

Business Venture is Child's Play For Local Dad

Local dad Allan Ramsay has turned his back on a 20-year career in the oil and gas industry and invested everything into opening a soft play centre in Greenock. Kids-R-Us at East Breast Street, beside the KwikFit premises, features a large soft play area, slides, separate toddler and baby zones and a football/basketball section plus party rooms and a restaurant area.

End To Lengthy Closure of Cycle Route In Port Glasgow

Part of the national cycle route through Inverclyde has reopened nearly three years after it was closed because of a landslip. Inverclyde Council has repaired the embankment at the former Nine Arches Viaduct at Devol Glen, Port Glasgow on National Cycle Route 75.

Three Inverclyde butchers are celebrating after being recognised at the Scottish Craft Butchers Awards.  Award-winning Drew McKenzie, of Robert Alexander, has been named best West of Scotland Sliced Sausage Champion with Duncan Mackenzie of Greenock and Wemyss Bay based McCaskie's also picking up awards.

Households in Inverclyde can now find out a range of services from council bin collections to the time of the next bus based on their home address. The new ‘My Inverclyde’ section of the Inverclyde Council website provides relevant local information including health services and public transport.

Belville Community Garden has been selected as a finalist for the Scottish Resources Awards. The Hub has been recognised in the category of  ‘Best Food Waste Initiative Award’ for its ‘Friday cafe initiative’ in tackling food waste.

Tunnellers Found Themselves Between a Rock and a Hard Place Under the Streets Of Greenock

Engineers dug a 90-foot tunnel by hand under Greenock town centre as part of efforts to reduce flooding. Difficult ground conditions meant traditional methods had to be used for Scottish Water’s £2.8million project, adding to the length of disruption.

Shared Equity Scheme Opens Door to Housing

Inverclyde Council is reminding people on low to moderate incomes they could own their own home through a Scottish Government funded scheme. The low-cost initiative for first time buyers (LIFT) offers up to 40% funding towards the price of a home.

An Inverclyde Council primary school has received one of the best reports in Scotland this year by official government inspectors. Inverclyde Leisure Vows to put Life-Saving Defibrillators Into All Its Facilities

Inverclyde Leisure has vowed to put life-saving defibrillators into all its facilities. The leisure trust - which runs local sports centres and a number of community centres - are investing in the devices and will register all 12 of the defibs with the Scottish Ambulance Service.

ICE Scotland Comes To The Rescue

An Inverclyde catering company came to the rescue of hundreds of stranded cruise ship passengers.  It was all hands on deck for Tony Buckley and his family, who run ICE Scotland and Buckley’s at Gourock Golf Club, after they were suddenly drafted in to provide refreshments for tourists who were given refuge at Greenock Town Hall after Storm Ali caused their cruise ship to slip its moorings on Wednesday.

Cruise Ship "Detaches From Quay" At Greenock During Storm

 A Luxury cruise ship broke free of its moorings during strong winds at Greenock Ocean Terminal on Wednesday. Tugs were called to help the 30,000-tonne Nautica which was forced to remain at anchor off the town.

Shipshape Response to Cruise Calamity at Greenock Hits the Right Note

Inverclyde's warm welcome for hundreds of stranded cruise passengers has been highly praised by one of the guest speakers on the ship. Luxury vessel Nautica slipped her moorings at Greenock Ocean Terminal during strong winds on Wednesday and had to anchor off the town until late into the evening, leaving nearly 500 passengers and crew unable to get back on board.

Financially Troubled TriBeCa Chain Rescued Thanks To Three Investors

The New York-style cafe and deli brand which traded from outlets in Glasgow and Edinburgh has been given a fresh lease of life after its previous owner went into liquidation. West of Scotland businessmen Puneet Gupta, Navdeep Basi and Suj Legha have stepped in to acquire four TriBeCa sites in Glasgow from liquidators at WRI Associates and immediately pledged to expand the brand across the country.

Over 300 Applicants For Just Five Apprenticeships at Ferguson Marine

Company chiefs say there is huge demand for jobs at the yard, particularly from young people. The firm recently took on five additional apprentices as part of the ongoing growth of the business and bosses say they received more than 300 applications, including 80 from female hopefuls.

Hundreds Take Part In Kilmacolm Running Festival

More than 400 people took part in the annual Kilmacolm Running Festival hosted by Inverclyde Leisure's Birkmyre Gym. The Toddle Woddle, three-kilometre, 10-kilometre and half marathon events attracted 427 participants.

 Success at National Energy Efficiency Awards

River Clyde Homes is celebrating success at the National Energy Efficiency Awards after scooping the prize for National Insulation and Fabric Project of the Year. The Inverclyde-based housing association was nominated for the award by Union Technical Services for a project which saw 250 hard-to-heat homes across Inverclyde receive upgraded insulation.

Police investigating multiple alleged thefts from Port Glasgow's retail park seized goods worth thousands at an address in Glasgow, breaking open an operation apparently working nationwide with possible links to serious and organised crime.

Masterchef Champion Enjoys Tasty Visit To Greenock For Launch Event

Sue Lawrence became well known after winning BBC’s Masterchef in 1991, going on to become a Scottish cookery and food writer.  More recently Sue has tried her hand at fiction writing. Sue paid a visit to Inverclyde Heritage Hub to have a chat with writer and critic Lesley McDowell about her career.
