 Key Road Realignment Project Complete In Greenock

Baker Street in Greenock has fully re-opened following work to realign the corner into Drumfrochar Road. The £3million project, delivered by Riverside Inverclyde on behalf of Inverclyde Council, also includes a redesigned traffic light junction at Ingleston Street, improved provision for pedestrians and landscaping.

Government Ferry Firm Hits Back In £97m Contract Row

Ferguson Marine has claimed it will lose £40m on the delayed deal,blaming "interference" by the Scottish government's ferry company. But Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) said only around £1.45m in extra costs have been incurred.

Ferry Firm Reveals Bid To Return To Islay Route

Western Ferries has revealed it is weighing up a bid to return to serving the Hebridean island of Islay – nearly four decades after withdrawing from the route.

Further Job Cuts Proposed By Inverclyde Council To Plug Funding Gap

Among the planned cutbacks are 38 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, an end to the free brown bin garden waste collection in favour of a paid-for service and a £1 a day fee for school breakfast clubs for children who do not receive free school meals.

Inverclyde Housing Association Picks New Maintenance Contractor

Cloch Housing Association has awarded a four-year contract for maintenance work across its 1,390 properties. The contract, which starts on 1 April, is worth over £3m and will see MPS replacing Novus as Cloch’s main contractor.

Enterprise Childcare Forced To Pull The Plug On Its Services

Parents and staff have been left devastated after Enterprise Childcare announced it will cease operating in Inverclyde after almost 30 years, after being forced to pull the plug on its services leaving more than 100 children stranded and 40 staff out of work.

Annual Report Shows Inverclyde Leisure Is Fighting Fit

Inverclyde Leisure's latest annual report shows a 3% improvement in turnover to £6.7m with an operating surplus of £60,000, nearly £50,000 higher than the previous year. Facilities use grew by 20 per cent with membership numbers up 5% to just short of 8,000.

State-of-the-art Gymnastics Centre To Open In Port Glasgow Industrial Estate

Claire Rankin and her partner Allan McKinnon are set to open their purpose built Twisters Academy in Gareloch Road in Devol Industrial Estate this summer. The couple will transform the 10,200 sq ft empty unit into a top of the range gymnastics centre featuring sprung flooring, a vault, bars, beam, trampoline, tumble run and foam pit.

Family Run Insurance Broker Agrees Takeover Deal

Independent broker, Campbell Smith Insurance, has been snapped up by Hamilton-headquartered Greenwood Moreland. Greenock businessman Willie Smith, who founded the company in 1974, has sold the firm with one eye on retirement, but he will continue at the West Blackhall Street office for the next 12 months to ensure a smooth transition.

Support Home To Be Converted Into Independent Living Flats

A residential home for people with physical disabilities is to be converted into independent living flats in a £2m development. Social housing and care charity Blackwood says that a decline in demand for care in MacLehose Court in Eldon Street has led them to a dramatic change of direction.

Greenock-based employability charity Stepwell, which also runs the Fresh cafes locally, has received a financial boost to help expand its range of employability services thanks to the Scottish Government and The Hunter Foundation's innovation fund.

The Haven Celebrates Its 30 Year Anniversary

The Kilmacolm charity offers a programme to support men addicted to drugs and alcohol. Over the last three decades the charity has grown and it now has over 18 residential beds with many its users going on to become support workers.

Guy Clark, Lord-Lieutenant of Renfrewshire, has relished every second of serving as Her Majesty's representative for the county. The 74-year-old says he'll forever cherish meeting many incredible volunteers who work tirelessly across the community.

Extension Plan For Gourock Bar 

Plans to alter and extend Cleats Bar in Gourock have been submitted to Inverclyde Council. Drawings show that stairs at the rear of the Kempock Street premises would be removed with the building extended into that space.

Nightclub Launches Bid To Stay Open Until 4.30am On Big Nights

Greenock's busiest nightspot launched a bid to stay open until 4.30am on big nights during the year. Bosses from Word Up tried to persuade the Licensing Board to allow them to stay open later on dates such as Hogmanay and May bank holidays.

Port Glasgow Artist Wins £10,000 Prize

Samantha Cheevers, 23, has received the Glenfiddich Residency Award, the largest prize to be awarded to a new artist in Scotland. She will now join contemporary artists from around the world on the prestigious Glenfiddich Artists in Residency programme at the Glenfiddich distillery in Morayshire.

Amazon Makes Donation To School's Science, Technology, Engineering And Maths Activities 

A campaign to inspire pupils in Inverclyde to embrace STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects was given a boost by the local Amazon team following a £2,000 donation to help fund science equipment for Inverclyde Academy, Greenock during a week of scientific activities.

Celebrity Masterchef star Jean Johansson is urging people to join her and cook a meal in aid of the hospice. The 37-year-old Port Glasgow television presenter helped launch the new Ardgowan Hospice Taste of Home campaign to encourage people to sit down together and share their love of food.

The Pirate and Bluebell the much-loved Gourock shop is celebrating the launch of its newest George Wyllie inspired product.  The 'Little Glass Boat’ is carefully handcrafted by Elizabeth from ELK Glass and Golden Oak Restoration, who create the plinths from solid oak repurposed from Loch Lomond whisky barrels.

Ocean Youth Trust Celebrates £19,000 Funding Award From Scottish Children's Lottery

Supporting more than 700 young people each year, OYT provides life-changing sailing journeys along the coastline of Scotland, lasting up to seven days, on which young people learn to steer, navigate, change sails and explore their environment. The money will allow the charity to support more than 120 additional young people.

School's Donation To Kilmacolm Toddler Group

St Columba’s School in Kilmacolm donated some of the proceeds from its community fair to Kilmacolm Playgroup and Toddlers. School rector Andrea Angus presented a cheque for £650 to the group which caters for parents and carers with children from birth to age five.

Rotarians Holds Its 65th Birthday Bash With Some Special Guests

Members of Greenock Rotary marked the club's milestone anniversary at the Tontine Hotel in the company of Baroness Goldie, a former Greenock Academy pupil and ex-leader of the Scottish Conservatives. The 65th charter dinner commemorated the official formation of the club in February 1954.
